Welcome to the Student Zone

Active learners – We need you!

At Beulah Juniors, we want to equip you with the skills to become curious, enthusiastic and reflective learners who are well prepared for every stage of your learning journey. Our broad and balanced curriculum offers you many opportunities to develop your understanding of how the world works and your unique place in it. As well as learning and remembering new vocabulary, knowledge and skills, we want you to become critical thinkers who can problem solve and express yourselves fluently. We want you to value every learning moment in school and take time at home to extend your learning even further. To achieve this, you will need to make sure you complete all the homework set and look for opportunities to continue this learning whenever you can.

Homework Reminders:

Reading:  You should read on Bug Club every day at home for at least 20 minutes. Every pupil’s Bug Club is uniquely set up so that you can work on the targets for your current Bug Club level. Remember to answer all the comprehension questions that pop up during the stories as this allows you to demonstrate your understanding of what you have read. Your class teacher will be checking that you have read daily that you have achieved ‘green bugs’.

You should also select at least one personal ‘Reading for Pleasure’ book from either from the library, their teacher's choice (Starbook) or a home book. Discuss the kind of books you enjoy with your parents too. You could share a book and take turns reading and being read to. Make sure you are ready to discuss the characters and plot of your chosen book in school as part of your reading time cycle.

Spelling: You will be given a weekly spelling homework based on the pattern they have learned in class. Your teacher will set a quiz in your ‘2dos’ on Purple Mash and also give you some written spelling work to take home. This may include: Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’, word searches, crosswords or writing new vocabulary in sentences. Get someone as home to test you on the spelling words, so that you are well-prepared.

GPS and Transcription: Every week, we practice transcription in school to improve fluency of handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Your parents will be sent a text with the sentences for the week to work on. Ask someone to read the sentence for you so that you can practice them using correctly-sized and formed handwriting. When you have finished, check you work together and correct try to improve any spelling errors you have made.

Homework also includes grammar and punctuation tasks set on Purple Mash. Look in your ‘2dos’ to find the work you have been set there.

Maths

TT Rockstars: You should complete at least 5 minutes of Times Table Rockstars every day. Your teacher may set you a weekly task to complete before you get your free choice of ‘Jamming, Gigs, Arena and Studio’. If you are practising, time in ‘Garage’ is a great way to practice a few questions at a time. If you are confident and want to move up our school leaderboard, you need to complete ‘Studio’ time to set your speed.

Numberstar: We know you love to be successful at Numberstar! To help you meet your targets and become more fluent, we have created homework books for each stage, so that you can work on your targets at home in preparation for your Numberstar Assessment in school, which happens every three weeks.

Other subjects

Mrs Bibi regularly sets you home tasks to do for French, many of you enjoy doing this research and adding to your knowledge about French and France – keep up with these tasks.

Your teacher may also set you things to go home and find out leading on for your daily learning in other subjects. You could use books, the internet or ask older siblings or adults what they know to help you continue your learning. Don’t forget that Mrs Warwick and Miss Budd also often set challenges in assembly too. Every day is a learning day….

Home Schooling Tasks

If you should need to self-isolate at home, but are well enough do to some work, you could complete any of the tasks on this page. If you need additional work to do, please contact your teacher via class dojo or the school office, so that tasks can be set for you on Purple Mash.

To access purple mash, you do not need an email, although you may see this as a login option on screen. Scroll down to where it says 'Find my school's  login page', then type Beulah Junior - it will take you to a login portal where you can use your usual username and password to sign in. Check your '2dos' to see what has been set for you.

Uploading work

You can upload your work to PurpleMash for your teacher to view:
1. First, save your finished work to Microsoft Work or Word document or take a photo of work you have done on paper using your device camera.
2. Go online to Purple Mash
3. Click on the yellow 'Work' folder (Click the black box with 3 white lines if you can't see this option)
4. Click on 'My Work'
5. On the toolbar above, click on 'Upload' (there should be a rectangular box)

7.  Bravo! Your work is now ready for your teacher to view.

Targets

Look below to see the different targets for each year group in the core subjects:

Reading Targets

Maths Targets

Writing targets

Wider Curriculum - Each half term, you will have a project to complete based on your topic. This is an opportunity to get creative! Your project could be in the form of a poster, model or science experiment. The written part could include a poem, newspaper report or information text. You could complete this online and email it to your teacher using Purple Mash, write it on paper or even make a large 'museum style' information card. You could also include maps, timelines, artwork, models or maybe even a rap or song!

Knowledge organisers

The knowledge organisers you use in school to learn and remember key information for each subject each half term are also emailed to your parents. You could try to memorise the new vocabulary listed and show off to everyone at home using these words in your conversations, or by explaining their meaning to another family member. If you are really keen to do this and cannot view them online, you can ask for a paper copy at the office.

Boosters - Booster classes will start in November for year 6 pupils. Please make sure that you are completing any homework set by your booster teacher and return it the following week.

If you have any questions about your child’s homework, please ask your child’s teacher or the Year Leader who will be happy to help.

Homework Clubs - Many of our homework activities require access to the internet, which we appreciate is difficult for families who do not have this at home. We offer lunchtime sessions for pupis to catch up on their learning - particularly for Bug Club and TT Rockstars.

Please speak to your teacher about any problems you have accessing online work.

Organisation and handing in on time

A very important part of preparing you for your future learning journey is to help you develop organisational skills for independent learning. Your parents/carers will be able to help you to set up a schedule to make sure your homework is done. Year 6 pupils, we expect you to start organising this schedule yourself!

Please make sure that any homework which needs to be returned to school goes straight into your bag when you finish it so that you are able to hand your work on time. This is crucial part of  the process.
